Know MoreKATHMANDU, March 17: Nepal's public debt has surged to Rs 2.388 trillion up to Falgun (mid-March) of the current fiscal year 2023/24, according to the data released by the Public Debt Management Office.
In the last eight months of the fiscal year, Nepal has accumulated an additional loan of Rs 218.86 billion. By the end of the Nepali month of Falgun of the current fiscal year, the government has repaid Rs 146.64 billion of internal debt and Rs 28.86 billion of external debt.
During this period, the government has incurred an increase of Rs 163.31 billion in internal debt and Rs 55.55 billion in external debt. The data reveals that the government's current internal debt liability stands at Rs 1.185 trillion, whereas its external debt liability is Rs 1.202 trillion.
Moreover, the government has paid only Rs 126.3 billion for taking these loans, while interest payments amount to Rs 49.47 billion.
