Nepal begins daily export of 400 MW electricity to India

KATHMANDU, May 30: Nepal has started exporting around 400 megawatts of electricity to India each day. This initiative was launched by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) last Monday night.

The increased electricity production is due to the onset of the monsoon season and higher temperatures, which have resulted in more snowmelt in the Himalayas, as per the NEA.

Kul Man Ghising, the Managing Director of the NEA, said that Nepal is currently exporting about 400 megawatts of surplus electricity to India daily. He also mentioned that the authority aims to export between 1,000 to 1,200 megawatts of surplus electricity to the competitive market this year.

The NEA has permitted the export of 656 megawatts of electricity from 15 hydropower plants in Nepal to the competitive market. Conversely, the NEA had to import electricity worth Rs 15.21 billion to satisfy the demand during the winter season.
