KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Agitating locals have staged a demonstration demanding the annulment of the Supreme Court (SC) order that mandates 40-meter standard along the riverbanks in Kathmandu. 

The demonstration was held in Kathmandu against the standard that mandates leaving a 40-meter stretch from the riverbank before any construction can begin.

After the Supreme Court (SC) increased the river's standard by 20 meters, demonstrations were held in several places in Kathmandu demanding its cancellation.

Locals of Gokarneshwor Municipality have staged demonstrations in Jorpati demanding cancellation of the new standards. They protested along with placards with various slogans such as “issue an order to cancel the verdict” , “cancel the illegal road standards”, “People should not be made homeless”, “take action against encroachers of public land and rivers.”

Following the order of the SC, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has also arranged a provision that the construction of any structures within the additional 20 meters is not allowed.

There have been demonstrations calling the Supreme Court's decision “immature” while the issue is being raised from the streets to parliament.
