Govt directed to prepare for monsoon-induced disasters

KATHMANDU, July 4: The State Affairs Committee under the Legislature-Parliament on Monday directed the government not to leave any stones unturned in disaster management.

The meeting of the House panel also directed the government to form a special coordinated work execution committee for monsoon-induced disasters.

The committee directed the government to that end stating that there was lack of coordination between local and central bodies in rescuing and providing relief to disaster victims.

The House panel had summoned Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Defense and Nepal Army and Armed Police Force for discussions on disaster management.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Bhim Rawal said that the government lacks resources for disaster management, adding that available resources are at standby.

DPM Rawal told the meeting the government had decided to procure three helicopters and they will be mobilized for rescue and relief. He informed the meeting that separate airbases will be constructed in Itahari, Surkhet and Katmandu for the purpose.

 Minister for Home Affairs, Shakti Bahadur Basnet informed the meeting that 92 incidents of flood and landslide occurred till yesterday from mid-April. According to him, 32 persons lost their lives, 17 went missing and 48 were injured in the natural calamities.

He further presented the data that 104 houses were destroyed and 157 houses were partially damaged by floods and landslides during the period.
