Doramba landslide: Death toll reaches eight

KATHMANDU, Aug 28: The number of people losing their lives in a landslide in Lekhark, Doramba Shailung Rural Municipality-3, has reached eight.

Pradeep Kumar Singh, chief of the District Police Office, said that the bodies of eight of the 10 people who were missing after  landslides swept away four houses  on August 25 (Sunday) in the morning, have been recovered as of Tuesday.

Singh said that after only the left foot of a woman was discovered on Tuesday, her husband Kumar Pahari identified it as belonging to his missing wife Binda Pahari based on the nail polish on her toes. Following this identification, the body was handed over to the family.

Last Saturday night, 11 people went missing in a landslide that occurred in Lekhark, Doramba Shailung Rural Municipality-3. One  individual was rescued alive, while the bodies of six others were recovered on the same day. After the body of one person was found and part of the leg of one person was found yesterday, the death toll has risen to eight.

Kaushal Neupane Adhikari, information officer of the District Police Office, said that Kale Pahari, 55, and Jhyapuri Pahari, 50, of Doramba Shailung Rural Municipality-3 are still missing. Police said that they are conducting a search operation to locate them. The bodies of Chandika Shrestha, 30, her 18-month-old son Ayush Shrestha, Urmila Pahari, 57, Sandeep Pahari, 30, 11-year-old Santosh Pahari, Bigyan Pahari, 14, - all of them being the residents of Doramba Shailung Rural Municipality-3 -  were found on Sunday and handed over to their families after the post-mortems.
