However, Member Secretary Lama nominated at the NSC through UCPN-Maoist quota and Minister for Youth and Sports Purushottam Paudel belonging to CPN-UML has had loggerheads over numerous issues in the past. Meanwhile, MoYS at the same time had also worked on the similar type of board last year. Similarly, the proposal is yet to be tabled and endorsed by the NSC board itself.Coincidentally, Lama whose tenure at the NSC ends on June 12, floated the proposal a couple of weeks before he walks out of the office. Lama also informed that he had no discussion about formation of board with Minister Paudel.
Despite the existence of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and three-member ad hoc committee formed by the MoYS, the National Sports Council (NSC) is working on the project.
The MoYS had formed a three-member ad hoc committee of CAN last year assigning former President Binay Raj Pandey as coordinator. However the court issued an interim order and prevented the committee from taking over day-to-day work of CAN. Along with running the CAN, the committee was also assigned to create an environment for formation of a cricket board.
Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu on Thursday, Lama claimed that the proposed board will be more inclusive, transparent and autonomous with less political interference.
He reiterated that the structure of the board will play a conductive role for the development of the sport in the country and activities of game will not be hampered or suspended at any pretext.
"I will propose for the setting up the cricket board during NSC's board meeting. Though I have not consulted the issue with Minster Paudel I have discussed about it with Secretary and Joint Secretary of the MoYS."
He informed that CAN will remain no longer exists once the proposed board gets endorsed by the Cabinet.
National cricket team skipper Paras Khadka who also attended the press briefing said that the proposed board was likely to bring stability in cricket. "Players want to see the formation of an independent cricket governing body. The proposed model is inclusive. I believe that it could bring stability and development in cricket if the NSC and MoYS work together," said Paras.
