Editors’ Society honours journalists with Govind Biyogi Journalism Award

The awards were instituted in memory of the Society’s founding chair and veteran journalist Govind Biyogi, whose role in strengthening Nepali journalism remains widely acknowledged.

NUWAKOT, Jan 18: Editors’ Society Nepal honoured senior journalists and media professionals by presenting the Govind Biyogi Journalism Award 2082 and the Govind Biyogi Special Journalism Award 2082 at a ceremony held on Saturday.



The awards were instituted in memory of the Society’s founding chair and veteran journalist Govind Biyogi, whose role in strengthening Nepali journalism remains widely acknowledged.


Nepal’s first president, Dr Ram Baran Yadav, handed over the awards during the programme organised at Suryachaur in Shivapuri Rural Municipality, Nuwakot. The event coincided with the 20th Memorial Day of Biyogi and brought together journalists, local leaders, and media practitioners from across the country.


The main Govind Biyogi Journalism Award 2082 was conferred on Dr Jagat Nepal, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Ratna Rajyalaxmi Campus. He received a cash prize of Rs 25,001 along with a certificate of honour in recognition of his academic leadership and contribution to journalism education.

The Govind Biyogi Special Journalism Award 2082 went to Chandani Hamal of Gorkhapatra Daily and Rajendra Manandhar, a columnist with the weekly Shukrava: Ya Tansapau. The organisers said Hamal was recognised for her reporting on environmental protection and efforts to address the effects of climate change. Manandhar was honoured for his long-standing contribution to journalism through Nepal Bhasa. Each award included Rs 15,001 and a certificate.


During the same programme, Dr Yadav also presented the Editors’ Society Nepal Honor to senior journalists Sharat Chandra Wasti and Sudarshan Acharya for their service to the profession.


Speaking at the event chaired by Society President Puru Risal, former president Yadav said journalism continues to play a strong role in supporting democracy. He recalled Biyogi’s dedication to free expression at a time when independent journalism faced severe pressure.


Shivapuri Rural Municipality Chair Govind Thapaliya said the presence and activities of Editors’ Society Nepal in the area have helped draw more visitors, adding that this has given a positive boost to the locality.


General Secretary of the Society, Shyam Dotel, said the awards aim to encourage professional journalism. He also said the Society has built its own facility to support research and journalistic work. Senior journalists, including Wasti and Acharya, reflected on Biyogi’s mentorship and his lasting influence on generations of journalists.
