Rates of the major vegetables over the past five days of Dashain, as issued by the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Board, show prices of big and small tomato, white and red potato, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, dry onion, bottle gourd and bitter gourd, among others, have fluctuated only by Rs 3 per kg in the wholesale market.[break]
According to the board, Kalimati market is still receiving around 700 tons of vegetables per day, which is similar to any other normal day. Given there is no problems with the supply and also a large number of people have already left the Valley, officials said the price would remain stable over the next one week as well.
"Prices of the vegetables will not increase during festive hour in the wholesale market because seasonal vegetables come from farms in neighboring districts such as Kavre, Dhading, Sarlahi and Chitwan," said Geeta Parsad Acharya wholesaler of Kalimati vegetables and Fruits market
According to traders, Kalimati wholesale market will keep operating till 10 am from November 22-26 (Saptami to Dashami). Wholesalers would continue receiving supplies from major production pockets and retailers can easily get hold of the supply during these operational hours.
"We anticipate this will prevent any unnatural hike in prices by the retailers,” said Acharya.
On Saturday, big and small tomato was selling at Rs 35 and 32 kg, potato red and potato white was selling at Rs 32 and 27 per kg. Similarly, onion dry was selling at Rs 26 per kg and carrot cost Rs 55 per kg.
In the wholesale market bitter gourd, bottle gourd and pointed gourd were selling at Rs 40, Rs 20 and Rs 30 per kg respectively.
