SINDHUPALCHOWK, Jan 11: Social organizations of Sindhupalchowk district, notorious for girl trafficking, organized a trail run on Saturday to raise awareness about the illegal flesh trade. Data show that Sindhupalchowk has been a major hub for girl trafficking in Nepal.

Friends of Himalayan Children (FHC) joined hands with Take On Nepal to organize the race to educate the people about trafficking with the aim of discouraging this malpractice.

FHC President Som Tamang said that the event was organized as a part of raising awareness about girl trafficking as the district has been hard hit by the repeated occurrences of such incident.

“We wanted to raise awareness on the issue and the race has been one of the major tools for us to fight for the cause,” said Tamang.

On Saturday, Tribhuvan Army Club's Bhim Gurung and Sangita Tamang of Batase claimed the titles of the 30-kilometer Batase Trail Run held at Batase, Melamchi of Sindhupalchowk in the men's and women's sections respectively.

Bhim completed the 30 km distance in 2 hours, 41 minutes and 52 seconds to claim the men's title, while Sangita, a local runner, clocked 3 hours, 46 minutes and 32 seconds to be the champion in the women's section.

Dan Bahadur Dhami (2 hours 45 minutes 41 seconds) and Ganesh Thakuri (2 hours 49 minutes 36 seconds) of Armed Police Force (APF) finished second and third respectively in the men's section, while Anita Tamang (3 hours 46 minutes 44 seconds) and Kumari Tamang (3 hours 49 minutes 32 seconds) of Batase claimed the second and third positions in the women's section.

The winners, runners-up and third position holders in both men's and women's sections received Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.
Bhim Gurung, who claimed the men's 30 km title, said that the track for the race was the best because of the clean environment.

“Running on the track was a nice experience as runners got clean environment for the event,” said Bhim.

Meanwhile, APF's long-distance runners claimed the top three positions in men's 20-kilometer race, with Laxman Malla Thakuri winning the title completing the distance in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 4 seconds, while Jitendra Rai finished second with the timing of 2 hours 5 minutes and 56 seconds.

In the women's section for 20 km, Sonujaya Rai emerged the winner as she clocked 3 hours, 4 minutes and 52 seconds to complete the race. Similarly, Sapana Tamang    (3 hours 47 minutes 32 seconds) and Dolma Lama (3 hours 48 minutes 32 seconds) of Batase claimed the second and third positions respectively.

The winners, runners-up and third place finishers in both men's and women's sections bagged Rs 9,000, Rs 6,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.

Likewise, Lama Om Syangtang (1 hour 18 minutes 23 seconds), Pradip Giri (1 hour 20 minutes 05 seconds) and Jitu Shrestha (1 hour 22 minutes 25 seconds) of Batase claimed top three positions in the U-15 boy's 10-kilometer race respectively, while Sunita Tamang (1 hour 35 minutes 23 seconds) and Bibi Maya Tamang (1 hour 45 minutes 30 seconds) of Batase and Melamchi's Apsara Chalise (1 hour 46 minutes) finished the winner, runner-up and second runner-up in the 10 km race for U-15 girls.

The top three finishers in the both the sections took home a purse of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000.
