The traffic police fined 148 motorbikes for triple-riding and alerted 200 riders in the Kathmandu Valley on Sunday.
The division has also expedited curbing the violation of traffic rules not only by bikers but by overcrowding microbuses and mini buses. Traffic police have stepped up checking for bikers for triple-riding and have been penalizing them with Rs 200 as fine, SP Posh Raj Pokharel, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Traffic Division Office said.
The tendency of triple-riding, overcrowding of passenger buses and traveling on roof of the buses has been on rise with the deepening of the fuel crisis across the country due to the Indian blockade.
As per the existing rules, a motorbike's capacity is just two people and carrying any more person is considered overloading.
“We had remained flexible on triple-riding as the number of vehicles on the road were very nominal as the fuel crisis was on peak. But over 60 percent of the passenger vehicles are now in operation,” SP Pokharel added.
The traffic police had initiated campaign against the triple-riding since December 1 by requesting and alerting the triple-riders. As the number could not be narrowed down, the traffic police started panelizing them.
By violating the rules, the riders not only endanger their own lives but the lives of others too, Spokesperson Pokharel said while explaining the number of road fatalities with the increase in fuel supply via formal and informal channels.
“Besides keeping close vigil on the triple-riders, we are to crack down on overcrowded micro buses and mini buses gradually,” SP Pokharel said. The traffic police said that they were not in a position to totally crack down traveling on roofs of the buses until the fuel crisis ends.
