The Perks of Being a Wallflower

This is a 2012 American coming-of-age film and an adaptation of the 1999 epistolary novel of the same name. The film stars Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller, and was directed by the novel’s author, Stephen Chbosky.[break]

This story is about 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman), an endearing and naive outsider, coping with first love (Emma Watson), the suicide of his best friend, and his own mental illness while struggling to find a group of people with whom he belongs. The movie takes you inside the life of Charlie, the introvert freshman who is taken under the wings of two seniors, Sam and Patrick, who welcome him to the real world.

City of God

City of God is a 2002 Brazilian crime drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles. The story was adapted by Bráulio Mantovani from the 1997 novel of the same name written by Paulo Lins, but the plot is loosely based on real events. It depicts the growth of organized crime in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro, between the end of the ‘60s and the beginning of the ‘80s, with the closure of the film depicting the war between the drug dealer Li’l Zé and criminal Knockout Ned.

Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer. The unflinching portrayal of the dark underbelly of life in Rio’s favelas is what caught everyone’s attention, but it’s the amazingly naturalistic performances by the largely untrained young cast that set this apart and made it clear that it’s not just another misery-fest.

To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a 1962 American drama film adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel of the same name, directed by Robert Mulligan. It stars Mary Badham in the role of Scout and Gregory Peck in the role of Atticus Finch.

Atticus Finch is a lawyer in a racially divided Alabama town in the 1930s. He agrees to defend a young black man who is accused of raping a white woman. Many of the townspeople try to get Atticus to pull out of the trial, but he decides to go ahead. How will the trial turn out - and will it change any of the racial tension in the town? The movie revolves around Finch in the Depression-era South who defends the black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his kids against prejudice.

Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road is a 2008 American-British drama film, based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates and directed by Sam Mendes, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

It’s 1955. Frank and April Wheeler, in the seventh year of their marriage, have fallen into a life that appears to most as being perfect. They live in the Connecticut suburbs with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job while April stays at home as a housewife. But they’re not happy. April has forgone her dream of becoming an actress, and Frank hates his job - one where he places little effort - although he has never figured out what his passion in life is. This is a story of a young couple who struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children.
