He submitted the amount to the CIAA as failing to do so would require him to stay at the CIAA custody until his recording of statements is over.
“But Onta said he would pay any amount of money for bail but will not stay in custody. So, the CIAA asked him to pay Rs 100 million as bail if he wants to get released on attendance. And much to everyone's surprise, he paid the hefty amount to the CIAA within two hours,” said Bhawani Subedi, press advisor to the CIAA Chief Commissioner Lok Man Singh Karki.
It is for the first time in the history of the CIAA that any individual grilled by the anti-graft body has paid such a hefty amount of Rs 100 million as bail, according to the CIAA.
Subedi said that Onta furnished bank guarantee equivalent to the bail amount sought by the CIAA from his account in Citizens Bank.
“It is very unusual for a government employee to be able to pay the hefty amount as a bail and it has certainly raised everyone's eyebrows,” said Subedi, adding, his recording of statement would continue on Tuesday.
Onta was suspended last week by the government for three months as per the recommendation of the CIAA. The anti-graft body had recommended to the government to suspend him and three other APF officers-- DSPs Suman Jung Thapa and Ram Krishna Maharjan and Inspector Bin Bahadur Thapa--to investigate their alleged involvement in financial irregularities and corruption while transporting uniforms, arms and ammunition, and other logistics to various APF units across the country.
A preliminary investigation of the CIAA has found that Onta has allegedly embezzled over Rs 70 million by using forged bills and other fake documents in the name of procuring logistics, according to CIAA officials.
