GoldenGate, NASA reach semifinals
KATHMANDU: GoldenGate International College and NASA International College booked semifinal berths in the girls´ section of the Third Bern Hardt Cup Inter College Basketball Tournament. GoldenGate defeated NASA 20-13 on Friday to top the group A of the tournament. However, NASA secured semifinal as the runner-up of the group. In boys´ section, Xavier International, Morgan and United Academy entered into the round of last 16. Xavier thrashed Pyramid 53-35, Morgan humbled Brihashpati 54-18 and United Academy pulled a 59-54 victory over Nobel Academy on Friday. Meanwhile, LRI thrashed Prime 51-46.
TIA, Valley Public in QF
KATHMANDU: Trungram International Academy (TIA) and host Valley Public entered into the quarterfinal of girls´ section in the Seventh Valley Public Inter School Basketball Tournament. TIA thrashed Oasis 34-10 while Valley Public enjoyed a walkover from Kathmandu Valley School. Likewise, Daffodil pulled a 27-26 victory over Baba Boarding School and Mount Kailash beat GEMS 23-13 to reach quarterfinal. Prithvi, Chandbagh, Bagmati and Angel Heart secured berths in the round of last eight.
NECOS judo kicks off
KATHMANDU: Samir Khadka set up final clash against Aashish KC in men´s 50 kg weight category as the Second NECOS National Judo Championship kicked off at Multiple Martial Arts Center (MMAC), Nayabazaar. Likewise, Sanish Rai, Indra Bahadur Shrestha, Abhishek Bhuju and Suman Bahadur Shrestha reached the semifinals of men´s 40 kg weight category in the tournament, organized by Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS). In men´s 30 kg, Laxman BC, Shubham Mandal, Harsha Bhattachan and Pramod Mandal secured semifinal berths. Altogether 277 judokas are competing for 18 gold medals in the tournament.
Shuttlers off to India
KATHMANDU: A Nepali badminton team left Kathmandu on Friday to participate in the Sushant Chipalkatti Memorial Junior International Badminton Tournament to be held in Pune, India from September 5 to 9. Young shuttlers Dipesh Dhami and Shiksha Shrestha will contest in the tournament. Dhami has been training in Malaysia currently and will join the team in India. Nepal Badminton Association President Ramesh Kumar Shrestha and General Scretary Ramji Bahadur Shrestha bade farewell to the team led by badminton official Gyanendra Sipahi on Friday amidst a program in the capital.
Jaiswal wins a match in Chess Olympiad
KATHMANDU: U-19 national champion Rupesh Jaiswal won his third round match in the 40th Chess Olympiad being held in Istanbul, Turkey though Palestinian team defeated Nepal in overall. Palestine acquired 2.5 points while Nepal gained only 1.5 points in the third round on Thursday. Jaiswal with 1,956 rating points defeated Tamra Attaallah with 2,084 rating points. Nepali Candidate Master (CM) Keshav Shrestha settled in a draw with Wail Mustafa. Shrestha had defeated IM Paul Anthony Garbett in the second round match against New Zealand on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the first Nepali FIDE Master Manish Hamal lost his third round match against Midha Abuaita and Deergha Raj Joshi lost to Palestine CM Jawad Ishan.
Bansbari FC opens players´ hostel
KATHMANDU: A division Mahindra Bansbari Football Club has started its own hostel for players at its office building in Bansbari, Kathmandu. According to club General Secretary Madhusudan Upadhyay, the hostel can accommodate 30 players. "We have opened the hostel to keep our players in a closed camp and provide them hygienic food and bed," said Upadhyay. All Nepal Football Association provided a financial assistance of Rs 100,000 to the club for setting up the hostel. "The hostel cost around Rs 400,000. Our local supporters raised the money for it," said Upadhyay. "We are training young boys now and we are planning to establish an academy with complete facility," said Upadhyay.
