SPORTS BRIEFS: Kotdevi, Cosmic in semis

KATHMANDU, Dec 7: Defending champions Kotdevi and Cosmic International Academy advanced into the semifinals of the Fifth FECA Cup Inter-school Boys´ Football Tournament on Tuesday.



Kotdevi thrashed Hebron Public School 7-1 in the first quarterfinal held at the town planning ground of New Sinamangal. Sandeep Karki and Khil KC scored a hat-trick each in the rout. [break]



The other goal was scored by Sirjan Karki, who was later adjudged the man of the match. Bikram Rai scored a consolation goal for Hebron. In another match, Dharti Gurung scored a brace for Cosmic as they defeated New Star Pole English School. Manoj Bohara pulled one back for New Star Pole. Gurung was declared the man of the match.



Prime, Nakhipot in final



Prime Sports Club and Nakhipot Youth Club set up a title clash after winning their respective matches on Tuesday during the First Motidevi Cup Women´s Open National Basketball Tournament. Prime ousted Whitehouse 50-30 in the semifinal held at the covered hall of the National Sports Council to secure the final berth. Nayana Shakya contributed 20 points for Prime in the victory. In another semifinal match, Nakhipot edged out Morgan 40-32 to advance into the final. Rojina Gurung scored 15 points for Nakhipot.


Hosts win in Gyan Carnival



The hosts Gyanodaya registered a 25-19, 25-20 victory over Anmol Jyoti in the junior boys´ volleyball event of the 17th Eicher Gyan Carnival, at their home court in Sanepa on Tuesday. In another match, Gyan Kunj got a walkover from LRI.



In the girls´ basketball event, Sridiwa and Prithvi School won their respective matches. Sridiwa thrashed Motherland 25-9 while Prithvi edged past Rato Bangala 23-16. In boys´ basketball, Daffodil, Gyanodaya and Wilson Academy won their respective matches.



Meanwhile, the hosts ousted GEMS 4-2 in boys´ football. The match between Siddhartha Vanasthali and Pushpa Sadan ended in a goalless draw.


Wins for hosts, Little Angels´



The hosts St Xavier´s School, Godawari and Little Angels´ (LA) School won their respective matches on Tuesday in the 15th Father Moran Memorial Primary-level Invitational Football Tournament. Rajkumar Tamang scored a hat-trick as St Xavier´s thrashed Gyanodaya Bal Batika 3-0 at the hosts´ ground at Godawari. LA also beat Chelsea 3-0. Paras Bohara scored two goals for the winners and Ajitraj Kayastha added another. Meanwhile, the match between St Xavier´s, Jawalakhel and Daffodil ended in a goalless draw.


Lalitpur beat Kathmandu



Lalitpur and Nuwakot won their respective matches on Tuesday in the Wai Wai U-19 Regional Selection Cricket Tournament of Region No 3 Kathmandu. Lalitpur defeated Kathmandu by two wickets at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur while Nuwakot struggled to beat Bhaktapur.



Kathmandu were all out for 79 runs at the completion of 19 overs. Bijay Gautam scored 28 runs for Kathmandu. In reply, Lalitpur met the target in the last ball of the 20-over match losing eight wickets. Rajesh Pulami struck 26 runs.



In another match, Bhaktapur put up 116 runs losing nine wickets in 25 overs as Rabin Joshi scored 27 runs for the team. Nuwakot met the target with three balls to spare as Gokarna Nepal contributed with 24 runs. Dilsan Khatiwada took four wickets for Bhaktapur but it was not enough to stop Nuwakot from winning the match.


Cross country cycling on Saturday



Himalayan View Cross Country Open Mountain Bike Championship is set to kick off on Saturday. The race, being organized by Nuwakot District Sports Development Committee under the technical assistance of Nepal Cycling Association, will begin from Budhanilkantha of Kathmandu. The route will cover a distance of 53 km through Guruje Bhanjyang, Thansing, Dhikur, Bidur and conclude at the historic Nuwakot Palace. The top three cyclists will bag Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. The race, which is being supported by the Nepal Tourism Board, is aimed at promoting historical sites and tourism centers of Nuwakot, according to Nuwakot District Development Committee President Uttam Pathak.



National, Bagmati in QF



National Campus and Bagmati College advanced into the quarterfinals of the Madan Bhandari Memorial Plus Two Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. National Campus registered a 45-30 win over Golden Gate ´A´ at the latter´s court. Krishna Gurung contributed 16 points for the winners. Bagmati struggled past Trinity 52-49 to enter the last eight as the winners of group B. Trinity also made it to the quarterfinals as the runners-up. Prime and Pentagon also progressed to the quarterfinals. The tournament is a part of the month-long sports festival being organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy. In the karate tournament held during the sports festival, Baneshwar dojo clinched the title in the team event of men´s kumute defeating Budhanilkantha dojo 3-1 in the final held at the Tribhuvan University. Balaju dojo finished third.


Shrestha elected RNGC president



The 32nd annual general meeting of Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) has elected Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha as its new president. The recently concluded meeting also elected a new 15-member executive committee, states a press release issued by the RNGC. Shrestha is the 12th president of the RNGC.
