KATHMANDU, Sept 21: Arguing that reinstatement of the Constituent Assembly (CA) is the only legitimate option to resolve the current political deadlock, a group of former CA members from major parties has drawn attention of the major parties to revive the CA.

A meeting of some former CA members in the capital on Friday also expressed reservations over the decision of four major political forces -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) -- to go for fresh CA election.[break]

"The best alternative to resolve the current political deadlock is to promulgate new statute as per the Interim Constitution 2063 BS. We have concluded that reinstatement of the CA for a brief time is a must," said a press statement issued after the meeting.

The meeting has concluded that new CA election will not only be illegitimate but also impossible without amending the Interim Constitution. "The sooner the CA is reinstated, the sooner we will have a fresh mandate. Amendment to the constitution is possible only through parliament," the statement said.

The meeting also has concluded that the constitution cannot be amended through the decision of some individuals, parties or institutions or collective decision of political party leaders.

The former CA members have urged the major parties to reinstate the CA also to fill the vacant positions in various constitutional bodies including in Election Commission, Supreme Court and the CIAA.
