Sources said a majority of the resigning policemen are those below the rank of sub-inspector, who have worked for over 15 years, and qualify for retirement.[break]
The administration department at the headquarters issued a circular on Monday directing the personnel to not resign. However, the headquarters has been forced to issue directives to not approve the resignations as the trend continues even after the circular was issued.
The policemen are given a one-time sum at retirement as the Police Hospital cannot provide health services to all staffers. Junior staffers get at least Rs 300,000 at the time of retirement as those up to assistant sub inspector are paid 21-month salary for health expenses. Sub inspectors get 18-month salary while those above sub inspector get that of 12 months.
Police Hospital can cater to just around 5,000 of the 60,000 strong force. Senior officers claim that the headquarters has no plan of scrapping the benefits. “The headquarters does not have any such plan. It is just a rumor,” police spokesperson Binod Singh said.
DIG Singh said many policemen resign annually due to different rumors every year. “The headquarters never takes any decision deceiving its staffers. We don´t have any plans of scrapping the benefits,” added Singh.
An official at the headquarters, however, claimed that the policemen, who qualify for retirement, have spread the rumors just to have an excuse to quit. “With the headquarters clamping down on additional income and increase in challenges for the force due to changing political context, they are leaving the organization,” the officer claimed.
Another senior officer also reasoned that a few staffers have resigned as they can find job with private security companies even in Nepal and can even fly abroad with the money they get as health benefits. “We will not accept the resignations that have come at a time when our challenges are increasing,” the officer stated.
