KATHMANDU, Jan 8: The Rastriya Prajantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) has staged a protest rally in the capital Sunday against the government decision to remove the statue of late king Tribhuvan from the Shahid Gate.

The rally led by party Chairman Kamal Thapa started from Kathmandu Durbar Square and reached Bhadrakali before converging into a corner assembly. [break]

RPP-N, the only pro-royalist party in the Constituent Assembly, has demanded the government scrap the decision or else it would go ahead with a stern nationwide protest program.

Earlier, the cabinet had decided to remove king Tribhuvan’s statue and keep it instead in the Narayanhiti Museum, saying the Shahid Gate as the name suggests is meant for martyrs’ statues only.

The Shahid Gate has Tribhuvan´s statue on the top of the statues of four martyrs—Shukraraj Shastri, Dasharath Chand, Dharma Bhakta Mathema and Gangalal Shrestha—who sacrificed their life while fighting against the autocratic Rana regime more than seven decades ago.
