RPP-N, the only pro-royalist party in the Constituent Assembly, has demanded the government scrap the decision or else it would go ahead with a stern nationwide protest program.
Earlier, the cabinet had decided to remove king Tribhuvan’s statue and keep it instead in the Narayanhiti Museum, saying the Shahid Gate as the name suggests is meant for martyrs’ statues only.
The Shahid Gate has Tribhuvan´s statue on the top of the statues of four martyrs—Shukraraj Shastri, Dasharath Chand, Dharma Bhakta Mathema and Gangalal Shrestha—who sacrificed their life while fighting against the autocratic Rana regime more than seven decades ago.
