BIRATNAGAR, Jan 14: Revenue collection was nearly twice as much as the target at the Jogbani customs point in the month of Paush (December 16 to January 14), date shows.

Easing of restrictions in import and export through the customs point led to Rs 2.89 billion being collected there. The target for the point for the sixth month of Fiscal Year 2015/16 was Rs 1.65 billion.

The Terai unrest and Indian blockade since the third week of September 2015 had hit the point, but flow through the customs point has been normal in the last three months and collection topped the targets for all three months, customs officials said.

Goods meant to have been imported months ago for the festive seasons like Dashain and Tihar had been sitting across the border and even though they missed the festive season, they were still brought in into Nepal after the imports were allowed. Goods were also rerouted to the point from Birgunj. There were main reasons behind the sizable revenue mobilization despite other trade routes having collected lower than target, Rajendra Dhungana, customs officer at the Jogbani customs point, said. “In addition to import of other goods, import of motor vehicles particularly contributed to the significant rise in revenue collection from the route,” Dhungana said.
Average daily revenue collection was Rs 100 million per day.

Revenue collection in the previous month was Rs 2.23 billion against a target of Rs 1.62 billion. The collection in the month of Kartik (mid-October to mid-November) was Rs 1.46 billion against a target of Rs 1.45 billion.

Revenue collection in the month of Aswin (mid-September to mid-October) was only Rs 980 million, short by Rs 560 million against a target of Rs 1.55 billion. Similarly collection was only Rs 1.23 billion in the month of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September) against a target of Rs 1.75 billion.

Nationally, revenue collection fell short by about 18 percent, according to the date from the last months.
