KATHMANDU, Sept 13: After much fuss, the government on Thursday finally promoted Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Kuber Singh Rana to the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP). A cabinet meeting this afternoon took a decision to this effect.
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar were reportedly at loggerheads over picking the new police chief from among three contenders. Bhattarai was in favor of Rana, while Gachchhadar backed AIG Visma Prasai for the Nepal Police´s top post. [break]
The government also decided to award the ICC World Cricket League Division Four winning Nepali team with a purse of Rs 300,000 to the players and the coach each. Nepal has been qualified for the Division Three, a major milestone for the Nepali national team so far.
Similarly, the government formed a 19-member high level commission under joint secretary at the Information and Communications ministry to make media sector more inclusive.
The government also approved the visit of a 14-member team led by Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha to the 67th session of United Nations General Assembly.
The government has also decided to provide kerosene and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at subsidized prices. As per the cabinet decision, a student can get subsidy of Rs 250 per LPG cylinder for maximum of four cylinders per year and maximum of 10 liters of kerosene per month with the subsidy of Rs 10 per liter.
