KATHMANDU, Nov 29: Senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal on Thursday accused Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai of trying to bring about the end of republic. He stated that the republic would come to an end without the president.

"The president is the symbol of republic," said Nepal addressing media persons at his residence in Koteshwar. [break]

"Only the president symbolizes the republic." Nepal also asked the prime minister not to threaten to the president and to resign immediately.

“If he (Bhattarai) really wants to resign, he must do so immediately," said Nepal, adding, "I resigned from the prime ministerial post without asking anybody."

The UML leader also accused the prime minister of obstructing consensus between the political parties. “Bhattarai would alone be held responsible if there is a confrontation between the parties,” he said.
