Bhattarai expressed the commitment to a UCPN-Maoist delegation that met him in Kathmandu on Tuesday to submit a memorandum letter on the behalf of flood victims. [break]Bhattarai said the government was gathering details about the destruction caused by the floods through local administration and the government was prepared to provide addition relief if required.
"He showed interest in long term assistance to the flood victims and promised to give necessary directives to the ministries concerned," member of the Tharuwan State Committee Pramod Sharma, who was in the delegation led by former Constituent Assembly Member from Dang 3 and senior leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara. It also included senior leader Janardan Sharma.
The five-point memorandum sought immediate relief and resettlement for flood victims, concrete embankments on Dolahi and Singai rivers and repair of canals under Praganna Irrigation Project, and concrete embankments on both banks of Rapti river for flood control.
Over 3,000 houses in three village development committees (VDC) of Deukhuri, Dang were inundated five days ago following three days of incessant rainfall. Over 2,000 houses in Sishaniya 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, and over 1,000 in Lalmatiya 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9, and Sonpur 1, 2, 3 and 4 were inundated following the biggest floods in the district in over 50 years. The houses in three VDCs were inundated as water from Rapti river and local streams entered the settlements.
The district administration office stated that 614 houses were destroyed in the three VDCs while Nepal Red Cross Society said 565 houses in Sishaniya, 23 in Lalmatiya and 49 in Sonpur were destroyed. The district development committee has distributed Rs 1,000 to each family while around 120 quintals of food grains, clothes and cooking utensils have been distributed to the flood victims by different organizations till date.
