KATHMANDU, June 1: UCPN (Maoist)-led 30-party opposition alliance has expressed itself positively about joining the Cnstituent Assembly (CA) as the ruling parties expressed flexibility over drafting the new constitution through consensus in the aftermath of the devastating April 25 earthquake.

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal proposed rejoining the next CA meeting scheduled for June 4, during a meeting of the alliance at Singha Durbar on Sunday. However, some political parties in the allaicnce have sought concrete commitment from the ruling side for drafting new constitution through consensus process. Briefing about the meeting with leaders of ruling parties in the recent days, Dahal had proposed joining the CA in view of the post-quake situation of the country."The situation of our country has changed following the massive earthquake and even ruling parties have expressed positively about consensus-based new constitution," Sadbhawana Party Co-chairman Laxman Lal Karna quoted Dahal as saying during the meeting.

However, some Madhes-based and fringe political parties in the alliance have sought concrete commitment or an agreement as precondition for joining the CA, said Karna. The 30-party opposition alliance has been boycotting the CA for the past four months to protest against majority-based process in the CA pushed by the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML alliance.

Parties remain at odds over the number and nomenclature of the to-be delianated federal provinces and the ratio of proportional representation to first-past-the-post electroal system.

UCPN (Maoist) Chief Whip Girirajmani Pokharel also claimed that all major political parties are currently focussed on seeking consensus for post-quake reconstruction work, the party is positive about rejoining the CA and seeking consensus through dialogue.

Spokesperson of the alliance, Prem Bahadur Singh said that next meeting of the alliance on Monday is likely to decide on whether or not to join the next CA meeting.
