The agreement between NSC and TU on building the covered hall is in line with the government's plans and policies for 2015/16, which was made public recently.National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Keshav Kumar Bista and TU Vice Chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan signed the 14-point deal under the presence of Purushottam Paudel, the minister for youth and sports.
The expected cost of the multi-year project is Rs 500 million. As per the deal, the facility to be constructed at 50-ropanis of land will be named 'Tribhuvan University Covered Hall'. The covered hall will have the capacity to accommodate 5,000 people.
"The time for completion of covered hall will depend on budget allocation and Detailed Project Report (DPR). We will start the process within a week after finalizing DPR," said NSC Member Secretary Bista, adding that it might take five years to complete the whole project. "However, we could finish the construction works within two years if we get sufficient budget and we will push for that."
The infrastructure will be owned by the TU and a joint management committee comprising officials from the TU and the NSC will be formed to run the covered hall. "The covered hall shall be owned and used by the TU but the NSC could use for organizing national and international tournaments free of cost," Bista said.
According to the agreement, the official document of the covered hall shall contain a logo depicting the TU and the NSC both. The TU will also build a parking space around the proposed venue.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister for Youth and Sports Purusottam Paudel opined that the TU needs to come up with sports science as a mainstream subject to make the sports sector popular.
Member Secretary Bista termed the agreement a milestone in the field of Nepali sports. He also thanked TU for the partnership and promised to join hand with the University in future for the development of Nepali sports.
Meanwhile, TU Vice Chancellor Maharjan said that the international standard covered hall was essential for the TU since it was all set to include Master's of Sports Science at TU for the first time from the academic session of 2015/16.
