KATHMANDU, June 5: Former national judo champion of Nepal, Mohan Bam, secured gold medal in Australia's top level competition on Friday while another Nepali national champion Khem Bahadur Thapa settled for a bronze medal.

It was Mohan's second gold medal in kata event in Australia.

On Friday, the pair of Mohan and Edmund Yuen finished first among five pairs of participants of Nage No Kata during the Australian National Judo Championships. According to an email forwarded by the National Sports Council, they collected 81 % score, far ahead of 68 % mark of second position holders, Mickle Marlee and Jacob Read.Mohan also paired with Khem in the same event to secure the third position.

Mohan, who had secured gold medal in the men's U-50 kg category during the Sixth National Games in Dhangadhi in 2012, has been learning judo in Australia since a little over one year while Khem of Armed Police Force moved to Australia just a few months ago. Khem had secured gold medal in the men's U60 kg during the Lumbini National Championships but decided to move abroad after being unjustly denied chances to represent the national team of Nepal during international tours.

Both of them were representing Victoria State and will be competing in U-60 kg bouts on Saturday. Mohan had finished fifth during the last edition and he hopes to improve his result this time.

"Thanks a lot to my kata (nage no kata) partners today. Got gold medal with Edmund Yuen and bronze with Khem Thapa. It was great to have awesome coaches and supporters," Mohan wrote on Facebook.

Mohan told Republica that it was the biggest national judo championship of Australia, which is organized by the Judo Federation of Australia annually.
