KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Nepal’s monsoon has started to weaken as the seasonal trough has shifted further south of its usual position, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD). Despite the shift, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal continue to influence the country’s weather.

This afternoon, skies are expected to remain generally cloudy over Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, while hilly regions are likely to see partly cloudy conditions. The rest of the country will also experience partial cloud cover. Moderate rainfall has been forecast at a few places in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim, as well as across hilly regions and at one or two spots in the Terai plains.

By tonight, weather conditions will turn generally cloudy across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, including most hilly areas, while other parts of the country will see partly cloudy skies. The MFD predicts moderate rainfall at several places in the Tarai and hills of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, with light showers possible elsewhere.

Importantly, heavy downpours are still expected at one or two locations in the hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces tonight. The MFD has urged the public in these areas to remain alert for possible weather-related impacts.
