Lawmakers demand use of Nepali script and digits in automobile number plates

KATHMANDU, September 6: Lawmakers have called for using the Devanagari script in the electric (embossed) number plate system for automobiles launched by the Department of Transport in Bagmati Zone since August 21.

KATHMANDU, September 6: Lawmakers have called for using the Devanagari script in the electric (embossed) number plate system for automobiles launched by the Department of Transport in Bagmati Zone since August 21. 



In a meeting of the Legislature-Parliament's Development Committee today, lawmakers said vehicles' number plates should be in the Nepali language so that general people can easily read about it particularly at time of accident. The use of English language in such number plates has provided chance for vehicles responsible for accidents to escape arrests as eye witness and victim failed to notice/ read the number plate properly.

Lawmakers Dr Shivaji Raya,Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Keshab Kumar Budhathoki, Bhakta Bahadur Thapa, Ramkrishna Ghimire, Bijyanath Chaudhary, Ganesh Kumar Pahadi and Hitraj Pandey were among those putting their views in the meeting. 


In replies to lawmakers' concerns, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bir Bahadur Balayar said the government had been trying to go for an electric number plate system since 2067 BS and it was implemented as the Ministry had already signed an agreement to this. He pledged to make initiations for using the Devanagiri script in it. 


Rs 3,600 has been fixed for putting an electric number plate for large four-wheelers, while Rs 3,200 for medium-size vehicles, Rs 2,900 for three-wheelers and Rs 2,500 for two-wheelers (motorcycles). RSS
