Kusunda people demand protection

DANG, April 5: The people from Kusunda, an indigenous community facing the extinction, have complained that government has not paid attention to their protection.

At a programme organized by the Raute Upliftment Foundation Nepal at Ghorahi on Tuesday, the Kusunda people said the State failed to adopt proper policy to protect the Kusunda tribe despite threat of extinction.Chairman of the Kusunda Development Society, Dhan Bahadur Kusunda, said it was because of the recklessness of the government the Kusunda were facing existential crisis.

As per the 2011 census, there are a total of 273 Kusunda people living in different eight districts of the western and mid western regions of Nepal.

Chairman Kusunda pointed out the need of the protection of their language and culture as country's property.

On the occasion, central member of the Raute Upliftment Foundation, Prem Bahadur Ramja, presented a paper on 'Kusunda people and their identity'. He stressed that the government could develop an integrated settlement for the Kusunda people, plan for tribal protection, and ensure higher education to the Kusunda youths.

It is said there are 98 Kusunda people in Dang district. RSS
