KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Hopes of bridging internal rifts within the Nepali Congress (NC) appear to be fading, as senior leader Ramesh Lekhak has acknowledged that talks with the rival faction holding Special General Convention in Brikutimandap have failed to make meaningful progress.

Speaking at the ongoing Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Lekhak said the party leadership had gone to great lengths to find a compromise but without success. “We made every possible effort. Despite showing maximum flexibility, a solution has not emerged so far,” he said, adding that the dialogue had failed to move towards a positive outcome.

The negotiations were initiated amid growing concerns within the establishment faction that the party was heading towards a split, particularly after party general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, along with several other leaders, openly aligned themselves with the Special General Convention camp.

In an attempt to avert a crisis, representatives from the establishment faction, the Special General Convention faction and the Dr Shekhar Koirala group held multiple rounds of discussions. However, the talks stalled over key demands raised by the Special Convention camp including calls for the party president’s exit.

With no consensus in sight, the stalemate has pushed the NC perilously close to a formal split, underscoring the deepening factional divide within the party and raising fresh questions about its unity ahead of critical political challenges.
