KC is new NBA chairman

KATHMANDU, April 8: Advocate Sher Bahadur KC has been elected as the 24th chairman of Nepal Bar Association, the umbrella organization of the lawyers across the country.

KC, who was contesting the election from democratic panel, garnered 3,798 votes while his nearest rival Bijay Kanta Mainali from the progressive panel secured 3,615 votes. Among the other candidates for the chairmanship, Manohar Sah got 207 votes while Ram Prasad Prajapati received 55 votes.KC had lost the battle for chairmanship with Hari Krishna Karki of progressive panel in the last election that was held four years ago.

As the vote counting concluded on Friday, out of the 25 positions in the central committee of the Nepal Bar Association, the democratic panel secured 19 positions, including chairman, general secretary, treasurer and four vice-chairmen.

Khamba Bahadur Khati of the democratic panel secured 3,634 votes to win the post of general secretary, while his nearest rival Dinmani Pokharel of progressive panel garnered only 3,455 votes.

Likewise, Gyan Ratna Shakya of the democratic panel has been elected treasurer with 3,467 votes, while his closest rival Hari Bahadur Khadka got 3,370 votes.

Madan Kumar Khadka (Eastern Region), Binay Singh (Central Region), Moti Raj Gautam (Kathmandu Valley), and Ganashyam Panta (Western Region) from the democratic panel and Shalikram Sapkota (Mid-Western Region), Kulananda Upadhyaya (Far-Western Region) and Usha Malla Pathak (Women) from the progressive panel were elected to the posts of seven vice-chairmen.

Shyam Kumar Biswakarma (Dalit), Madhur Pathak (Madhesi/Muslim), Raman Kumar Karna (Madhesi/Muslim), Asmin Kumar Rai (Indigenous Community), Hari Naryan Chaudhary (Indigenous Community), Indu Koirala (Woman), Sanu Maiya Maharjan (woman) were elected members on the NBA executive committee under reservation quotas while Padam Bahadur Shahi, Gyanendra Prasad Adhikari, Arun Poudyal, Laxman Acharya, Krishna Prasad Paneru, Indra Bahadur Adhikari, Bishnu Maya Bhusal and Krishna Kumar Aangdambe became executive committee members from open category.

Newly elected Chairman KC said that he will lead the NBA in impartial way and keep the organization united.

Addressing the press and lawyers after winning the election, KC said that NBA under his leadership will play an effective role in the implementation of the new constitution and the provision of federalism. He also said that the new leadership in the NBA will play effective role also on ending corruption, irregularities and delay in justice delivery.
