Kaligandaki landsilde victims demand relocation

MYAGDI, June 3: People whose houses were buried in the Kaligandaki landslide at Ramche-9 of the district on May 24 have expressed their wish to be relocated from the area. The massive landslide had buried 26 houses in the VDC forcing the inhabitants from the area.

The victims demanded relocation with former minister Bal Krishna Khand and Constituent Assembly (CA) members, Ratna Serchan, Resham Baniya, Gyan Kumari Chantyal, and Usha Gurung of CA sub-committee and others, who reached there to examine their plight on Tuesday. Prior to meeting the victims, the CA members had inspected the landslide site and taken stock of the losses.The victims complained that they are in great trouble as they lost homes and properties worth millions of rupees. They asked the CA members to take their problems seriously and claimed that their plights are more serious than that of the earthquake victims.

"The earthquake victims can rebuild their home at the same place but we cannot," Bhim Bahadur Karki, a landslide victim, of Bhagbati-2 complained with the CA members, adding, "Tell us where we should live."

Victims of the 26 households, who have been taking refuge under the makeshift tents near roadside along the Beni-Jomsom highway have been living in pathetic conditions.

"Where are we supposed to go and what should we do?" Hari Maya Purja questioned with the CA members. She asked them to relocate the displaced families immediately.

The victims lamented that all their food stocks, belongings cattle were buried in the landslide.

No human casualties were reported as the administration was swift in moving the locals to safer zone.

The CA members promised the victims to draw the attention of the concerned agencies and the government to their plights.

Khand said that the government has to relocate the victims to a safer place as soon as possible. "The condition of the landslide victims is indeed worse than the earthquake victims. The government must relocate them to a safer place and also provide them employment," said Khand.

Meanwhile, CA member Baniya stressed the need to relocate the people as soon as possible. "Another tragedy might occur if the victims are not relocated immediately. It must happen before the monsoon kicks off," said Baniya.

According to Tek Bahadur KC, the chief district officer (CDO) of Myagdi, said several organizations have provided relief materials to the displaced people but relocation remains a problem.
