KATHMANDU, Nov 1: Sales of the home appliances increased by up to 35 percent during Dashain festival this year, according to major home appliances dealers in Kathmandu.

Dealers of major brands like Samsung, LG, TLC, CG, Beko, Haier, Toshiba, Kelvinator and Godrej, among others, had launched different offers in order to boost sales of refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, LEDs and LCDs during the festive season -- a time when sales of home appliances peak.[break]

Traders say sales of home appliances rise during Dashain because most of the working people receive allowance equivalent to at least one month of salary, most of which is spent on consumer items.

“Dashain and sales of electronic goods are correlated as people have enough disposable income during this time of the year. Besides, people living in urban areas are continuously upgrading their living standards, and home appliances are deemed as components that add value to their living condition,” said Binay Tripathi, deputy general manager of Him Electronics, authorized dealer of Samsung electronics for Nepal, told Republica.

Him Electronics, whose sales are said to have jumped 30 percent this festive season, said sales of refrigerators and LED televisions have surpassed their expectations, while sales of washing machine went up by only 10 percent.

“Mid-range refrigerators and 32 inch to 40 inch LED televisions generated most of the business for us,” said Tirpathi.

CG Electronics, a subsidiary of Chaudhary Group, on the other hand, claimed sales of home appliances went up by over 30 percent this festive season.

“Among the products that we sold, sales of refrigerators rose by around 40 percent, whereas sales of LCD and LED television increased by around 10 percent,” said Niraj Baniya, marketing manager of CG.

Ashwini Todi, managing director of Orbit International, authorized dealer of Haier and Beko electronics for Nepal, said: “Sales during Dashain contribute to around 30 percent of our annual sales as most of the people go on buying spree at this time of the year."

The offerings of gifts through scratch coupons coupled with discounts extended during the festival period also pushed up sales, Todi said, adding, there was greater demand for LED televisions of Haier brand and refrigerators of Beko this festive season. “Since the schemes are valid till Tihar, we expect sales to go up till that time," he said.
