KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Nepali handicraft entrepreneurs have sought support of the government for promotion of their products in the global market.

Speaking at an interaction on 'Role of World Craft Council (WCC) in Handicraft Promotion', Indra Bahadur Shakya, former president of Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) said Nepal, which became of WCC in 1990, has not been able to take benefit from membership of WCC despite being rich in culture and tradition.

FHAN has been working to promote Nepali handicraft and artisans in the international market.

Puskar Man Shakya, vice president of WCC, said that Nepali entrepreneurs should register themselves at WCC and take benefits that the global organization. Highlighting the works of WCC, Shakya said that WCC won't give any benefit unless artisans and exporters explore the opportunity it has to offer and grab it.

On the occasion, Dharma Raj Shakya, president of FHAN, requested the government to help in globalization, marketing and promotion of Nepali handicraft products. He also said that handicraft produced in Nepal can beat crafts produced in any other country in terms of quality and uniqueness.

“Nepal is rich in culture, art and tradition. Our handicraft products have found place in various international museums. Unfortunately, many places do not mention where the product was made. They don't give due credit to artists,” he said, adding that the issue should be taken into consideration seriously.

Responding to handicraft producers, Narayan Prasad Bidari, director general of Department of Cottage and Small Scale Industries, expressed commitments to help entrepreneurs, artisans and exporters for their organizational development. “The government will facilitate and promote local artists, skills and cultural attractions in the international market,” added Bidari.
