KATHMANDU, Feb 9: The government is preparing to extend the tenure of the probe commission formed to investigate the September 8 and 9 Gen Z protests for a third time.

A cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, scheduled to meet at 4 PM on Monday, is expected to approve the extension.

The three-member commission, headed by former Special Court Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, was formed shortly after the protest to investigate incidents of human and material loss incurred during the Gen Z protests.

The commission was initially given a three-month mandate to investigate all aspects of the protest including physical and material loss. The commission had missed its first deadline, prompting the Cabinet to extend its tenure by one month. A subsequent extension of 20 days was again approved, which is set to expire on February 11.

Sources said that as the commission has yet to complete its work, the government is now planning another extension, though the exact duration has not been finalized.

Former AIG of Nepal Police, Bigyanraj Sharma and legal expert Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari serve as the other members of the commission.
