KATHMANDU, July 10: Former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has expressed concern over the failure of the government to pay attention to the conservation of the Chure area.

At the 'Madhesh discourse' organized in Janakpur on Saturday, former president Yadav said desertification of the entire Tarai/Madesh was inevitable due to the current unchecked exploitation of the Chure region. "The Terai region used to get adequate rainfall resulting in a good harvest of paddy, maize and wheat," he said, adding that water scarcity is a serious problem now.

He further added that the time has come for importing products into Terai, which is caused by the unchecked exploitation of the Chure area. Deforestation in the Chure area is equally a big concern.

Dr Yadav also reminded the warning by the experts that if the exploitation of the Chure region continues as it is, the entire Terai/Madhesh would turn into a desert in the coming 30 years. “Therefore, collective efforts are imperative to prevent it,” he stated.

He further recalled that the President Chure Conservation Program was launched when he was the president. The thriving jungle of concrete built by felling trees is alarming in this region.
