KATHNANDU, March 27: Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to hold the election to pick the parliamentary party leader on April 6.

The party's election committee has finalized the election date despite pressure from a faction within the party to delay the election for another week. Election committee coordinator Ramesh Rijal said that nominations will be filed a day earlier.Election of the parliamentary party executive committee has been set for April 8 as parliamentary party statute needs amendment for the election. "We have to revise the PP statute in line with new constitution to elect the executive committee," said Rijal. The PP executive committee comprises 29 members including a secretary and a treasurer.

The PP statute of NC has not been amended to replace development regions by provinces after the promulgation of the new constitution in September 2015.

Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Ram Chandra Paudel are expected to fight for the post. Paudel has been pressing Deuba to support him for the post recalling that Deuba used to say party chief should not take dual responsibility of president and PP leader. But Deuba has not said that he will quit the race, and his aides have been saying that Deuba will contest for the post.

PP leader will be a candidate for the post of prime minister from the NC as per the party tradition.
