KATHMANDU, Feb 4: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has settled altogether 21,648 complaints filed at the anti-graft body during the last fiscal year (2071/72 BS).
Of the total settled complaints, 14,748 were resolved by its central office, 6,843 by the CIAA's regional offices while only 21 complaints were solved by the district administration offices.
In total, the CIAA received 31,213 complaints compared to 22,602 complaints filed the previous year.
The anti-graft body filed 303 cases at the Special Court last year while it had filed 168 cases in the same court the previous year. In total, 903 individuals were made defendants in the CIAA's cases. Of them, 828 were male and 75 were female.
"The Special Court handed down verdicts on 108 cases filed by the CIAA and the anti-graft body has got success in 82 percent of the cases," said CIAA Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki in his speech given while submitting the report to President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Thursday.
He said the CIAA has succeeded to recover over Rs 120.9 million through its decisions and to bring around 660 ropanies of land under the government's control. In the fiscal year 2070/71, it had succeeded to regain altogether 213 ropanies of government land.
Stating that the need of the hour was to bring additional areas under the its ambit, Karki, however, said that the new constitution has further limited its jurisdiction even more than the Interim Constitution-2007.
According to Karki, such a move may weaken the initiatives of controlling corruption.
"Therefore, with a view to achieve the broader objective of controlling corruption, I request the president to take necessary initiatives to make the Authority powerful through constitution amendment," said Karki.
The CIAA's annual report has found massive irregularities during the course of purchase and distribution of relief goods provided to the earthquake victims last year.
