El Colacho is a week-long festival celebrated during mid-June in the Castrillo de Murcia municipality of Spain. This festival literally translates to baby jumping. Hence, the main highlight of the festival is the jumping over of babies by El Salto del Colacho, the men in yellow and red colored mask and suit. It’s believed that the masked men-popularly known as “devils”-free the baby of any sin and bless them with good health and fortune. Once the babies have been jumped over, they are sprinkled with rose petals before being handed over to their parents. The devils can also be seen terrorizing and chasing people around the street with whips during this event. However, this festival has come to be highly condemned because of religious and safety issues in the recent years.
