LALITPUR, Nov 13: Thirty-one Nepali scientists have been featured in the global ranking of the world’s best scientists, prepared annually by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier.
According to Secretary of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Rabindra Dhakal, the ranking highlights scientists with the highest level of global influence based on research citations and publications.
“Stanford University compiles this list every year, taking into account the number of citations and published works. The inclusion of Nepali scientists in the 2025 list reflects their growing international impact in research, innovation, and sustainability,” Dhakal said.
He added that the recognition demonstrates the global influence and contributions of Nepali researchers across various disciplines.
Does Doing Business ranking mean anything?
Among those listed, seven scientists are from Tribhuvan University (TU), while two each represent the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC), BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
From Tribhuvan University, the recognized scientists include Ajaya Bhattarai, Ramesh Prasad Adhikari, Bhishma Karki, Niranjan Parajuli, Ram Prasad Sharma, Govinda Prasad Dhungana, and Ranjit Kumar Shah from TU Teaching Hospital.
From BPKIHS, Sanjiv Kumar Sharma and Suman Rijal made the list, while Arun Bhakta Shrestha and Philip Wester were included from ICIMOD.
Other Nepali scientists featured include Dr. Niranjan Koirala from NAST, Shiva Prasad Pudasaini from the Institute of Complex Flows, Meghnath Dhimal from NHRC, and Chhabilal Ranabhat from the Global Centre for Research and Development.
The list also includes Mark Jordans of the Transcultural Psychosocial Organization Nepal, Santosh Nepal of the International Water Management Institute, Rajkumar Thapa of TU, and Hari (surname not mentioned) from Gandaki University.
Additionally, Peter R. Hobbes from CIMMYT, Surendra KC from the Global Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, and Sudankumar Jha from Kathmandu University have been recognized.
Others named are Randip Rakuwal and Ganesh Kumar Agrawal from the Great Academy Pvt. Ltd., Sunil Kumar Shrestha from the Kathmandu Cancer Center, Bikas Baral from the Biotechnology Society of Nepal, Alok Atreya from Lumbini Medical College, Uttam Paudel from NNRS, Pukar Khanal from Silicon Script Science Pvt. Ltd., Suraj Bhattarai from the Global Health Research and Medical Intervention for Development, and Bipin Chaurasia from the College of Medical Sciences Nepal.
Dhakal noted that the inclusion of Nepali scientists in Stanford’s global list signifies remarkable international recognition of their scientific excellence and capabilities.
