“Fatalities have been recorded each year during holi due to people´s carelessness. Many have died by falling off the rooftops and due to drink driving, while others have sustained severe injuries. We urge everyone to celebrate the festival of colors for peace and harmony in the society,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, smearing colors or throwing water-filled balloons at anyone without his or her consent, riding motorbike with more than one pillion rider or without helmet on and drink driving, among others, would not be tolerated.

DSP Pawan Kumar Giri, spokesperson at MTPD said that those showing disobedience to the rules would be held and punished. “If little girls and boys are found to be crossing the limits, their parents have to be answerable of the mischief. In case of adults, we will go ahead and detain them,” Giri said.

“Those who resist will be charged for public offense. They will surely be in trouble,” he added.

According to Giri, the police would raise awareness among the public through loud speakers a day before holi.
