KATHMANDU, Jan 4: Iceberg Madhyapur Youth Association edged past Bauddha Football Club 3-0 on Friday to come out of relegation zone at least for 24 hours in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull A Division League.

Madhyapur has 13th place with 10 points from 11 matches. Armed Police Force, which is to take on CGM Club Sankata Saturday, could again push Madhyapur into relegation. APF is in 14th position with nine points from 10 matches. Bauddha is at rock bottom in the points table, with one point from 11 matches.[break]

Hem Tamang conceded an own goal in the third minute to hand a 1-0 lead to Madhyapur. In an attempt to clear a corner taken by Abioduh, the ball deflected off Tamang into the net. Abioduh doubled the lead in the 25th minute as a 20-yard free kick directly entered into the top bar. Super-sub Binod Bista sealed the 3-0 win for Madhyapur in the last minute of regulation time. He beat an offside trap and overcame a defender and goalkeeper to send the ball home.

Bauddha rarely made any threatening moves in Madhyapur´s area.

"The win boosts our morale but the relegation threat still looms over us. We´ll try our best to avoid relegation," said Upendra Man Singh, president and coach of Madhyapur. "From the current situation, we havelearnt that we can´t rely only on local players in top and professional level football," he added.

His counterpart Kiran Shrestha lamented that Friday´s defeat has nearly shunted his side into relegation.

MMC moves to second place

In the day´s early kick off, Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marsyangdi Club (MMC) pulled off a 4-2 victory over Mahindra Bansbari Club to move to second place in the points table.

MMC has 24 points from 11 matches but NMB Machhindra Club could topple it if the latter wins or plays a draw against Simrik Saraswati Club on Saturday. Machhindra has 23 points from 10 matches. Bansbari is in 15th position, second from last, with five points from 11 matches.

Sujal Shrestha opened the scoring in the 32nd minute for MMC. Fils Sergio Chico provided a short pass to Anil Gurung, who set up a pass for Shrestha within the box and Shrestha netted it on the far post.

MMC skipper Gurung doubled the lead in the 35th minute. Amir Shrestha crossed the ball into the area and taking advantage of misunderstanding between Bansbari goalie Ajit Prajapati and Captain Charles Rai, Gurung sent the ball home with a jumping header above the goalie.

Shrestha scored his second in the injury time of the first half to widen the gap to 3-0. Shrestha tapped in the ball deflected from Charles Rai in a cross off Nabin Neupane.

In the second half, Bansbari not only resisted MMC´s attack but showed guts by scoring two goals.

Nir Kumar Rai taped in Sham Babu Magar´s shot challenging MMC goalkeeper Aqbolade Emmanuel Dare and defender Zambo Anatole Thierry in the 69th minute.

Amir Shrestha made it 4-1 in the 71st minute with a powerful shot but Rai cut the lead in the 87th minute as he took control of a cross from Magar and shot it into the net.

Earlier, Charles Rai prevented Anil Gurung and Chico from scoring with goal line clearance in the 28th and 30th minute of the first half.

MMC coach Krishna Thapa said that despite the win his team could not perform as per expectation. "We witnessed some lapses in our defense," he said.

Bansbari coach Dipesh Yonjan Lama said that his side conceded goals early in the first half because of misunderstanding and lapses in the defense. "After conceding three goals in the first half, we tried a comeback but could not achieve it," said Lama.
