KATHMANDU, May 8: With five new deep tube wells coming into operation, over five million liters of water has been added in the main distribution channel of the Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL).

The KUKL, which is responsible to supply drinking water to household taps, however, said that additional production will make little difference to the water starved consumers of the capital as the demand is too high. [break]

"Additional five million liters of water has been added in the main supply system from five new tube wells," said Milan Kumar Shakya, spokesperson of KUKL. He said that additional production has helped ease the supply woes for KUKL, which has been facing intense pressure from the consumers. The office has been receiving complaints about poor water supply every day and consumers also protest frequently at KUKL´s main office.

The office, which has been supplying drinking water once a week to some parts and once in every 10 days to others, said that the routine will be slightly changed and people will get more water due to additional production.

Shakya said that people, who have been waiting for months to get connected with the KUKL line, got new taps after new tube wells started production. With sharp decline in production in winters, the office stops providing new taps until next monsoon. Shakya said that several ground sources of KUKL have also been drying up.

The office said that new deep tube wells installed at Mahankalchaur, Dobhan, Sanglekhola, Manamaiju have started production. The Project Implementation Directorate (PID) under KUKL said that works of other 15 deep tube wells will be completed within next few months.

"Out of 20 deep wells, works at teh remaining 15 would be completed within next few months," said Lila Raj Dhakal of PID. He said drilling has been completed at some tube wells and works at some tube well sites are in the final stage.

To manage the increasing demands, the PID has planned to install 40 new deep tube wells in various parts of the capital. Dhakal said that the PID has already issued tender notice for 20 other deep tube wells. The office has planned to complete works within two years.

The KUKL said that demand for water in the capital stands at over 350 million liters a day, whereas production is less than 80 million liters.
