42pc drop out in far west annually

KATHMANDU, Dec 29: Forty-two percent students in far-western region drop out of school due to financial problem annually, a survey conducted by the Population Division under Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) reveals.



Family problem, marriage, failure in exams and lack of interest in studies are other reasons for dropping out. The study has also shown that the proportion of female dropouts is higher compared to males.[break]



The 14, 754 respondents from 9,000 households across the country surveyed in the year 2010/11 were aged betwen 10 to 24 years.



The drop out figure for female students aged bewteen 10-14 stands at 86 percent. Most of them quit before they cross the primary level. The corresponding figure for male students is 67 percent.



The drop out percent is higher in villages than in urban areas for all grades. Thirty percent of the students interviewed said they quit studies due to financial crisis while 25 percent cited family problems. Likewise, 17 percent said they had no interest in studies and 10 percent revealed they quit study after they failed.



Among the dropout students, the proportion of religious minorities is higher. In case of female respondents, marriage turned out to be the main reason for dropping out from studies.
