BIRGUNJ, March 13: A group of women who had reached the district administration office in Kalaiya, Bara in to stage a protest over the rape of a minor have clashed with police.

The police had tried to intervene as the women tried to encircle the office Friday afternoon with broom and sticks in their hand. The group of women has been demonstrating under a campaign "Beti Bachau Abhiyan" launched after death of the raped Puja Sah.

Puja had died this Sunday, 16 days after her brutal rape by a local. The police have already arrested the accused, Kanhaiya Gupta, 28, of Kalaiya-6.

Although the administration has expressed commitment to initiate legal actions against the alleged rapist, some women groups in the capital and Bara have been demonstrating to pressurize the government to act sooner. Gupta has already admitted to the crime.

However, those advocating justice for the victim fear that slow legal procedures and weak implementation might let the guilty escape legal actions.

The family has not yet cremated the dead body of Sah. "Beti Bachau Struggle Committee" has placed the dead body at Bharatchowk in Kalaiya and has refused to organize the last rites until the guilty is punished.

The struggle committee has also demanded compensation for the victim's family. "The protestors clashed with the police after the latter tried to prevent them from encircling the CDO office," said Om Prakash Giri, one of the activists.

The situation turned tensed following the clash. Women activists as well as few police personnel sustained minor injuries. According to CDO Balkrishna Panthi, the police did not use force against the agitators. "The women tried to get in forcefully. They even pelted stones at the police," he said.

The struggle committee and locals of the district have demanded thorough investigation of the case, capital punishment to the guilty, better security in the region and at least a million of rupees in compensation for the family of the victims.
At least five minors have been raped in Bara over a period of a year.
