SPORTS BRIEFS: Central Region becomes team champion

KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Central Region won the team championship of the First Madan Bhandari Memorial National Taekwondo Tournament on Wednesday bagging eight golds, six silvers and two bronzes.



Mid Western Region secured the second position with three golds, four silvers and one bronze while Nepal Army finished third with three golds, two silvers and three bronzes. [break]



Nepal Army´s Bijay Sunwar and Mid Western Region´s Yogmaya BK were adjudged the best players in the men´s and women´s category respectively. Both won gold in their respective matches held at the Bulls Indoor Hall, Dhapasi during the two-day event.



Other gold medalists in the men´s category were Bivek Timilsina, Chauchi Dangol and Pawan Tamang of Central Region; Suresh Dhimal and Prabin Giri of Eastern Region; Paras Thapa of Far Western Region and Dan Bahadur Mali of Army. In the women´s category, Alisha Lama, Tulasa Rajthala and Srijana Rai of Central Region won gold during Wednesday´s matches. Meanwhile, Western Region won two golds, four silvers and ten bronzes while Eastern Region claimed two golds, three silvers and three bronzes. Far Western Region took home two golds, one silver and two bronzes.



Reliance in last four



Reliance International Academy entered into the semifinals of girls´ category in the Second BST Inter-college Basketball on Wednesday. Reliance defeated Bagmati 18-12 in the quarterfinal played at the court of hosts BST College, Gongabu, Kathmandu. Reliance will take on NASA in the semifinal on Saturday while Trinity will lock their horns with Xavier International. In boys´ category, Lincoln beat LRI 49-31 to fix a pre-quarterfinal date with Whitehouse.


Rating chess begins



Man Bahadur Magar Memorial Rating Chess Tournament kicked off in the capital on Wednesday. Top seeded Ganesh Man Duwal, FIDE Master Manish Hamal and former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar won their respective matches in the first round of the tournament. Likewise, Rajan Puri, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Shyam Sundar Shrestha, Deepak Maharjan, Aashnarayan Lawat, Bikas Kuluju, Umesh Sainju and Rajendra Parajuli also won their respective matches on Wednesday. Altogether 38 players, including 23 rated and 15 unrated players, have been participating in the tournament organized by The Himalayan Chess Club. The tournament will end on Saturday.



CAN Secretary XI win friendship match



Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) Secretary XI defeated Team of Coaches and Managers by 11 runs in a friendship cricket match played at the TU Cricket Ground on Wednesday. CAN Secretary XI, electing to bat first, were all out for 200 runs in 22.5 overs. Former national skipper Raju Khadka struck 91 runs off 38 balls for CAN Secretary XI. He hit nine boundaries and seven sixes in the blistering innings. Manjur Alam added 23 runs. Anup Thapa took four wickets for coaches and managers. In reply, coaches and managers were all out for 189 runs in 23.5 overs. Rikesh Lama scored 65 runs while Umesh Upadhyay and Rajesh Pokhrel added 30 runs each. Naresh Rana claimed three wickets for CAN Secretary XI.


Big wins for South Siders



The hosts South Siders outplayed Unique Group to register a 63-35 win in men´s category of the Second South Siders Open Basketball Tournament held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium on Wednesday. Anurag Zimba contributed 13 points for the winning side. In another match, Utsav Chand scored 17 points for Nakhipot Youth Club (NYC) as they thrashed Norbulingkha Sports Club 78-28. In the women´s category, Whitehouse defeated NYC 34-27 riding on 15 points from Mrinalini. Samiksha Nuepane topscored with 17 points for Snow Leopard but couldn´t prevent her team from losing 24-36 against Golden Gate.



Rana set up title clash with Gauchan



Mayanka Rana set up a title clash with Karuna Gauchan in the U-10 girls´ singles category of the Ninth Jaykar Memorial National Junior Tennis Tournament after winning their respective matches on Wednesday. Rana defeated her twin sister Mahika 9-6 while Gauchan earned a walkover from Anne Mathema at the Satdobato Tennis Complex. In the U-10 boys´ singles, Nabin Joshi and Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya won their respective matches to enter the final. Joshi thrashed Arjan Dhungel 9-1 and Bajracharya saw off Pranab Khanal with the same scoreline. In the U-12 girls´ singles, Mayanka Rana, Bijisha Shrestha, Bibhuti Karki and Sachi Gurung made it to the semifinals winning their respective matches. In the U-16 boys´ singles, Pranjal Kayastha, Shakti Sharma, Suyash Rajbhandari and Milan Rokaya secured the semifinal berths. Likewise, the players to advance into the semifinals of the U-9 boys´ singles are Pranab Khanal, Ankit Gupta, Swaraj KC and Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya. In the U-12 boys´ singles, Ivan Hoe Lissanevitch, Egill Sigurdson, Chandra Man Rokaya, Bipin Thapa, Pranab Kayastha, Sakchham Karki, Avash Malla and Abhaya Gauchan advanced into the quarterfinals.


RCT win opener



POKHARA: Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) won the inaugural match of the 23rd Adarsh Cup National Football Tournament that kicked off in Pokhara on Wednesday. Patrick Erole scored a brace as RCT defeated the hosts Adarsh Youth Club 2-0 at Bhandardhik in Lekhnath Municipality. Erole scored in the 40th minute and again in the injury time to disappoint the hosts. Altogether eight teams are competing in the nine-day tournament that will conclude next Thursday. Manang Marshyangdi Club, Jawalakhel Youth Club, Armed Police Force, Himalayan Sherpa Club, Pokhara-XI, Adarsh Youth Club UK, RCT and the hosts are vying for the title. The tournament has a cash prize of Rs 100,000 for the winners and Rs 60,000 for the runners-up, according to coordinator of the tournament Bishal Shrestha.
