Shiva Ram falters but maintains lead

KATHMANDU, April 17: Shiva Ram Shrestha carded an even-par 67 to take a three-stroke lead on the second day of the NPGA President's Cup at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Thursday. Nepal number one Shiva Ram, who carded a course record eight-under 59 on the first day, totaled eight-under 126 to take a three-stroke lead over Rame Magar, who played four-under 63 for the total of five-under 129.

Chuda Bahadur Bhandari is third at three-under 131. Bhandari who scored five-under on Wednesday shot two-over 69 on Thursday.


Surya Prasad Sharma is at fourth position with one-under 133 followed by Purna Sharma in the fifth position at even-par 134.

Shiva Ram failed to repeat his first day's performance and faltered to 67. He didn't have a good start on the front-nine bogeying the seventh and ninth holes. On the back nine, he birdied 10th, 11th, and 13th holes against a bogey on 15th hole.

In the amateur section, Tanka Karki scored six-over 73 for a total of seven-over 141 but still leads by one stroke over Arun Tamang, who also carded six-over 73. Bikash Bogati is at distant third with 11-over 145.

A total of 23 professionals survived the cut at 11-over 145. In all, 42 players -- 35 pros and 7 amateurs -- teed off the seventh event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2014-15. The final round of the event will be played on Friday. Of the total cash purse of Rs 300,000 available, the winner will receive Rs 55,000 while the runner-up will take home Rs 37,000.
