Oli said Khanal, who is also the chairman of CPN-UML, must step down and pave the way for a national consensus government.[break]
"Our chairman had committed to form a national consensus government and we waited for that for the last three months in vain," Oli told reporters at a program on Monday. "Now, we need to bid adieu to this government as the last three months were absolute waste of time."
He said that UML will not continue to support a failed government just because it is headed by the party chairman. He urged Khanal to clear the way for formation of a new government without any delay, which, according to him, was the need of the hour.
"We can´t let the country plunge into a crisis just to serve the interest of an individual," he explained. "It has become clear that his slogan for national consensus government was just a gambit to bag the prime ministerial post and, in doing so, he has cheated the party and the country," he said. He said that former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, also a UML leader, stepped down just to pave way for national consensus government although he was heading a government that had comfortable majority in parliament.
Nepal and Oli lead a rival faction against the party Chairman Khanal within the UML.
He said the new coalition government should also incorporate Nepali Congress (NC), the Madhes-based forces and other political parties.
About prime minister´s decision to give home ministry to the Maoists against the party decision, Oli said the Central Committee (CC), the party´s all-powerful body, would take an appropriate action. He said the CC does not spare anyone, be it an ordinary cadre or the party chairman, if found violating the party decision.
When asked if the CC, which had unanimously recommended Khanal´s candidacy for the post, would recall the prime minister, he quipped, "Those who prove to be a failure, must quit."
