WASHINGTON DC, USA: The Democratic Party has fielded a candidate of Nepali origin in the election of lower house of Virginia (House of Delegates).

Jeevan Tiwari is contesting from the 87th House of Delegates District of the state in the poll scheduled for November 3. He was selected unanimously after two candidates of the party in the election race withdrew their candidacies.

There is population of some 25 percent Asian Americans in the area that has some 80,000 eligible voters.

“Besides well-wishers of the party, support from Asian Americans is enough for my victory,” Tiwari said.

Elections have been held twice in the Delegate District that was added in 2010. David Ramadan of Republican Party was victorious in both polls. Ramadan is from business background and is a wealthy person of the area. He had defeated candidate of Democratic Party with a margin of 50 and 187 votes respectively.

However, Tiwari is upbeat about his victory and has already started campaign by appointing a Campaigning Manager. No legal binding in reproductive rights of woman and accountability from the state in education and upbringing of children are issues for campaigning.

Tiwari is also a central member of Democratic Asian American Caucus, Virginia and Chairman of America-Nepal Society (ANS).

“Nepalis residing here still fell difficult to accept USA as their home country,” he said, adding that it is the main reason for no representation of Nepalis in policy making bodies.

Tiwari has requested all to materialize the opportunity of a Nepali representing the House of Delegates.

Tiwari, currently residing in Manassas, Virginia, was born in Lekhtnath Municipality of Kaski district and had arrived in USA in 2004.  He is associated with the party since 2009.
