Minister Shahi leaves for Azerbaijan to attend COP-29

KATHMANDU, Nov 9: Minister for Forest and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri left for Azerbaijan on Saturday to attend the 29th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP-29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. 

The world event is being held at Eastern European nation’s capital Baku from November 11-22. Minister Shahi’s delegation includes Forest and Environment Secretary Dr Deepak Kumar Kharal. 

The COP-29 is expected to feature issues significant to Nepal including climate change adaptation, loss and damage; climate finance; technological development and transfer and issues of least developed countries (LDC). The Ministry has prepared a position paper on climate change and impact in Nepal. 

As per reports, the position paper prioritizes the mountain issues, loss and damage, and climate finance. Nepal will also have a high-level delegation led by President Ramchandra Paudel in the COP-29. President Paudel is scheduled to address the high level inaugural session of COP-29 attended by world leaders. He will also take part in a separate high level session on November 13.
