KATHMANDU, Aug 26: As per their earlier announcement, the Madhes-based parties burnt copies of Supreme Court verdict on national dress at Maitighar Mandala on Friday.

Madhesi leaders had objected the verdict and even obstructed parliament proceedings saying national dress did not represent the multicultural and multiethnic features of the country as provided in the interim constitution.

Meanwhile, in a bid to address Madhesi leaders’ concern on national attire, Speaker Subas Nembang on Thursday in parliament announced all costumes used by communities across the country are national attires.

“As per the Article 5 (1) of the Interim Constitution all the languages spoken as mother tongues in Nepal are the languages of the nation. Based on this ground, all the costumes used by the communities across the country -- all the way from Himal to Madhes -- are national attires,” Nembang announced at the parliament meeting. “I draw the government´s attention toward this issue as it is a serious matter.”
