KATHMANDU, Dec 7: It’s December once again, and with the festive season of Christmas already here, it’s time for family reunions and merriment once again.

To welcome the joyful season, you surely must be looking for new ideas to decorate your home to infuse it with the Christmas spirit.[break]

With so many pretty decoration items available in the market, you may be tempted to buy everything and anything. That, however, can cost you a lot. So, setting a decoration plan or a theme and sticking with it will help you a lot to choose, and shop more wisely.

Once you have a theme, it will also help you stick to a simple decoration rather than piling up everything that can look too gaudy.

“The combination of red and green is great for such a holiday decorating; so I choose to stick with it,” says Sailo Pradhan, a housewife, eagerly planning for Christmas decoration this year. Of course, there are other options, like wintry white and blue, white and shimmering colors, and a lot more. You just need to find the right decorations.

Starting with the Christmas tree, which is considered the holiday centerpiece, you will be able to get them at different nurseries, such as Khadka Nursery in Maharajgunj and Chameli Nursery in Pulchowk, at the price range of Rs 300 to Rs 2,000. Christmas balls and bells are amongst the top decorative items for Christmas trees, but you can also find other attractive items, like reindeers, angels, sheep, stars and many more such embellishments in felt with shimmering sequins and glitters.

The variety of Christmas tree decorations with prices ranging from Rs 25 to 200 per piece at handicraft stores, like Dhukuti in Kupondole, will provide you with all the choices you need. You can also get some good Christmas decorations in different gift shops in and around town during the season.

You can also choose to go with natural decorations with flowers and fruits as your centerpiece.

“I use poinsettia flowers to make garlands and wreaths and for other Christmas decorations,” says Pradhan. Wreaths incorporating different materials, from poinsettia leaves to garlic bulbs, fruits, red chili and other locally available objects can not only be great decorations but also a fun project to get your family members involved in.

Lighting is another important element for holiday decoration. Candles can be a great option for holiday lights in Kathmandu, especially with the current load shedding. Colorful string lights, available at any electronic store, are one of the most popular decorative lights. LED string lights are also great for the minimalist lighting décor.

Christmas, like many other festivals, is special as it brings loved ones together.

And the holiday décor is not complete without your personal touches. So get your family involved, revisit your childhood, cut out snowflakes from papers, and make your own stockings, wreaths and other Christmas decorations.

And don’t forget to have a jolly good time.
